Zephyr Texas History
Zephyr is a small ranching and farming communtiy located between Brownwood, Texas and Goldthwaite, Texas on Highway 183.
A "zephyr" is a gentle summer wind. The name was given to this community in 1850 when a party of surveyors were pinned down by one of the "blue northers" famous in Texas. With a bit of tongue in cheek sarcasm, they dubbed the place "Zephyr" and the name stuck. In 1879 the community applied for a post office. The residents couldn't think of any better name, so it was used on the application.
The railroad extended its tracks from Brownwood to Lampassas. The tracks were about a mile from town so the town moved its grocery store and post office near the tracks.
In 1909 a tornado hit the town and destroyed most of Zephyr. 20 residents died in the tornado.
